Window and Application Management. My Story

Hi, I’d like to share my story. Yes, maybe it sounds like self-promotion, but I hope you’ll find it interesting — especially if you’ve ever been frustrated with how clumsy window management still is on modern operating systems.

Almost no OS offers a truly convenient way to manage, arrange, and switch between windows. That’s probably why there are so many apps trying to solve it — but most of them treat “window arrangement” and “window switching” as two separate problems.

That never made sense to me. Some apps help you snap windows into place. Others just switch between them. I wanted to create a unified experience — fast, intuitive, and logical.

Here’s my story:

It all started with macOS Spaces. A nice concept: you can group apps into different workspaces (say, “Email & Communication” in one, “Dev Tools” in another). But then you press Command+Tab — and macOS shows all your apps, even from other workspaces. It breaks your flow.

So I created Command-Tab Plus 1 — it replaces the system app switcher and only shows apps from your current space. It hit #5 Product of the Day on Product Hunt. There’s a version 2 now, but I’m thinking of going back to the original focus.

Then I built MaxSnap — a basic tool for window snapping. Nothing revolutionary, just a solid experiment.

After that came ActiveDock — a customizable Dock with groups, a Start Menu, window previews (like in Windows), and most importantly: the ability to manage window positions right from the preview. This was my first real attempt to tame the window chaos.

Next was 3D WindowSwitcher — it includes all the popular ways to switch windows (list, grid), plus a real 3D switcher like in Linux Compiz/Fusion. I’m currently updating it for the latest macOS versions.

Then came DockView, which added window previews and positioning directly into the Apple Dock — no new interface, just enhancing what’s already there.

Finally, I made Slides WM — a VIM-style window switcher. It even had a predictive AI feature to guess which window you wanted (currently disabled, but the idea is still alive).

I continue to improve these apps so they stay compatible with new macOS versions and help users work more efficiently.

If you care about speed, order, and focus in your workspace — I’d love your support or feedback

My solutions aren’t perfect — and they’re not meant to be. I see them as steps toward something better. That’s why I truly value feedback, ideas, and open discussion. If you have thoughts, suggestions, or even criticisms — I’m always listening.
